ARCHITECTURE PHILOSOPHY OF B. HUI
My design philosophy is a balance between humility and self-confidence. You need to have humility to look at the designs of others and appreciate what is working and how to repeat that. Then you need self-confidence to re-invent what has been done before, adding your own ideas and interpretation.
When learning from any other design you need to deconstruct what the elements are, so that you could recreate it in your own mind. Then you have a strong enough understanding of it to reinvent it and create a unique design.
Style is an idea that is underplayed nowadays, but I still believe in it. Style could rather be called "first impression"... The first impression is very important, because that is how others read your creation. So when you design you have to have an idea what the first impression is that you want to leave on your viewer. If the impression is, "modern, light and airy" then every element you put into that design, needs to work toward that impression, adding elements that contribute to that, while also eliminating all that detracts from it.
